My Dog Gets Dirty So Easily — The Little Things That Actually Make Pet Care Easier

Sep 16, 2026

If you have a dog, you probably know this situation.

You take them outside for a short walk, and somehow they come back looking like they’ve completed a 5-mile obstacle course.

Mud on the paws. Dust in the fur. Water everywhere after a bath.

And somehow, they always seem happiest when they're the messiest. 😅

I used to think keeping a pet clean meant having a huge collection of grooming products and spending a lot of time brushing, washing and cleaning.

But honestly, I've found that the small things you do regularly make a much bigger difference.

Here are a few simple things that can make everyday pet care easier.

🐾 1. Don't Ignore the Paws

Your dog's paws go through a lot.

They walk over grass, pavement, dirt, wet ground and sometimes places you'd rather not think about.

After a muddy walk, it's tempting to simply wipe their feet with a towel and move on.

The problem is that dirt can get stuck between the paw pads.

A quick paw rinse can be much easier.

A simple paw-cleaning routine

After a particularly dirty walk:

  1. Rinse the paws.
  2. Gently clean around the pads.
  3. Check between the toes.
  4. Dry the paws properly.
  5. Give your dog a treat for cooperating.

A silicone paw washer can be useful for this because it lets you clean the paws without having to put your dog completely into the bathtub.

It's especially handy when the rest of your dog is perfectly clean but the paws definitely aren't.

See our Paw Washer if you're looking for a simple option.

🪮 2. Brushing Doesn't Have to Be a Big Event

Some dogs seem to love being brushed.

Others act like you've just announced the end of the world.

If your dog isn't a fan, try making brushing sessions shorter.

Instead of trying to brush the entire coat at once, spend a few minutes at a time.

I also find it easier to brush when the coat is dry and you're not rushing.

For dogs that shed regularly, a self-cleaning slicker brush can make the process a little less annoying because you can remove the collected hair from the brush without picking it out strand by strand.

If your pet has longer hair or tends to shed quite a bit, you can take a look at the Pet Slicker Brush in our grooming collection.

The goal isn't to brush for an hour.

A few minutes regularly is usually much easier than trying to deal with a giant pile of loose fur later.

🛁 3. Make Bath Time Less of a Struggle

Bath time can be chaotic.

Wet dog.

Wet floor.

Wet towel.

And somehow, the dog manages to shake water onto the one thing in the room you were trying to keep dry.

A simple trick is to massage the shampoo into the coat rather than just rubbing it around quickly.

It helps distribute the shampoo and can make bath time feel more like a massage.

That's one reason I like the idea of silicone bath massage gloves.

The soft silicone tips help work shampoo through the coat while you're washing.

If your dog enjoys a good scratch, bath time can almost become a little spa session.

Almost.

Until they shake water all over you.

🧻 4. Keep a "Pet Cleaning Station"

This is one of those small things that sounds unnecessary until you actually do it.

Keep your most-used pet-care items in one place.

For example:

  • A towel
  • Paw cleaner
  • Grooming brush
  • Pet-safe cleaning supplies
  • Treats
  • Waste bags

It saves you from running around the house looking for something while your muddy dog is standing in the middle of the floor.

I've found that making pet care convenient makes it much easier to stay consistent.

💧 5. Don't Forget About Water

Clean drinking water should always be available to pets.

Some cats, in particular, can be surprisingly picky about where and how they drink.

A water fountain can encourage some pets to drink more because the moving water is more interesting than a completely still bowl.

The Biggest Pet-Care Lesson I've Learned

You don't need to make pet care complicated.

It's easy to see hundreds of different pet products online and think you need everything.

You don't.

A good brush, something for cleaning muddy paws, a towel and a reliable water setup can already make everyday life noticeably easier.

What matters most is creating little routines that work for you and your pet.

Maybe that's brushing for five minutes before dinner.

Maybe it's cleaning the paws every time you come home from a muddy walk.

Maybe it's simply keeping the water bowl clean and fresh.

These little things add up.

And at the end of the day, that's what Paws of Peace is about — finding practical things that make taking care of the pets we love a little easier.

Because they give us plenty of love.

The least we can do is make their everyday life a little more comfortable. 🐾❤️
